HOT STOVE LEAGUE EXCITEMENT FOR SOFTBALL LOVERS YOUNG AND OLD.
PASSPORT STAGES PRESENTS BUZZARD BALL “BY SENIORS FOR SENIORS AND FAMILIES” MARCH 7-16 IN WEST ST. PAUL
Passport Stages presents BUZZARD BALL, a heartwarming comedy by Minnesota native Alexx Stuart, about a not-so-good senior softball team and the wives who put up with them. First produced in Arizona, the play, considered a cross between Grumpy Old Men and The Golden Girls, brought rave reviews from audiences of all ages, especially senior groups.
When we say “not so good” softball team, The Vultures are really bad – not winning a game over their past three seasons. “We Stink! We can't even beat a nursing home team. The shortstop had a walker, the three outfielders had five hip-replacements between them the last year. The right-fielder received a birthday call from Willard Scott.”
Then, during one of their postgame gatherings as Dirty Larry's Bar (“We play games at 9 a.m., our idea of going out after the game is LUNCH!”) a youngster shows up, Sonny – age 49, but turning 50 right before the end of the year. “He's so hot,” says one of the wives. “Kinda like a cross between Johnny Depp and Mick Jagger.”
Will the team win a game? “Winning is so much better than losing,” says one of the wives. Will they reach tournament status? Will they be able to eat all their French Fries before they turn cold?
Passport Stages is a continuation of the theatre concept started by Twin Cities television personality Allan Lotsberg with his New Fogey Follies which ran for 17 years beginning in the mid-90s. It was based on getting together a group of actors 50 years or older and offering them a venue for theatrical entertainment.
Performances are scheduled for Friday and Saturday, March 7-8 and 14-15, at 7 p.m., Tuesday, March 11, at 1 p.m., and Sunday matinees on March 9 and 16, at 3 p.m.
Tickets are $15 a ticket, $12 for groups of 10 or more. The theater has carved out a performing area at Faith United Methodist Church, 1530 Oakdale Avenue, West St. Paul, Minnesota. You get to visit Dirty Larry's with the players and watch the game unfold from the bleachers through the eyes of loving spouses.
The dozen cast members come from all across the Twin Cities. Jerry Hoffman (Mendota Heights), Brian Joyce (West St. Paul), Stu Naber and Mike Oslund (Golden Valley), , Eric Wood (Downtown St. Paul), Shannon Kennedy and Helen Donnay (South Mineapolis), Annie Zimbel (Northfield), Mikel Clifford (Como St. Paul), Janet Mondloh (Fridley), Judy Hoffman (Mendota Heights), and Christine Dornbusch (Phalen St. Paul) who happens to be the lone youngster in the cast, the trophy wife of manager Monte (“Isn't she so cute, girls. She's wearing her mommy's makeup!”)
The play is directed by Steven Peterson (Woodbury) who has worked with most every theatre in town as an actor or director, notably Park Square, Theatre de la Jeune Lune, Shakespeare & Company, Lakeshore Players, and Theatre in the Round. Playwright Alexx Stuart is co-founder of the Duck Soup Softball Fiasco, a summer softball tournament that has existed for 30 years in St. Louis Park. An inductee of the Minnesota Softball Hall of Fame, he is a graduate of Browns Institute and Carleton College and was a sports columnist for five years in the Twin Cities. The playwright will do an audience talkback session following the March 7 and 8 performances.
Anything else that you wish to know can be found on the Passport Stages website at http://www.passportstages.com or by calling 612-244-6420. The performance facility is totally handicapped accessible and audience members are encouraged to enjoy an afternoon at the ballpark.
